Givedot and #GivingTuesday
Giving Tuesday is the spectacular day of giving that follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday, taking place this year on December 3, 2019. Encouraging people to “do good”, Giving Tuesday has flourished into a worldwide movement that inspires people to join forces and celebrate generosity.
It started in the United States in 2012 and has been growing in reach and influence each year. Crossing borders, Giving Tuesday reached Canada, the United Kingdom, and Brazil by 2013. Giving Tuesday currently has over 60 participating countries and the large number means international organizations have even more of a donor-base to build upon.
There is a spirit of joy, connection, and love where Giving Tuesday is celebrated. Most organizations in the US aim their campaigns to focus on giving back after a weekend revolving around the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Other countries around the world focus on Giving Tuesday in ways that best fit their local culture. For example, in Liberia, Giving Tuesday fits into the community with volunteerism as opposed to financial giving. The idea is that anyone can help others regardless of their own financial standing.
According to Google Trends, there has been an average increase of $65 million dollars each year since Giving Tuesday started (totaling over $1 billion overall). It has been predicted that giving for 2019 will exceed $500 million. This means that each year there are more dollars and donors out there to attract to your own organization. Use this day as an opportunity to inspire generosity in your community!
